At Speke Uganda Holidays we have decided to make the months of May and June about the Rhinoceros. We have realized that it is not just Uganda that faced a problem with poaching but there are other countries in Africa that are facing this problem. After attending the Indaba exhibition this year, we are made aware that South Africa is also facing the problem of poaching and the Rhinos in South Africa will soon be extinct if this horrible act goes on.
Using statistics from African Wildlife Foundation, there are at least two Rhinos killed in South Africa every 24 hours. This is mainly done by the locals for the rhinos horns. There were 122 rhinos killed in 2009, 333 killed in 2010 and 448 killed in 2011 and this has not yet stopped. No one is thinking about the rhinos first and its a shame that we have become this selfish. http://awf.org/section/save_rhino?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=2012_rhino
Our country Uganda had such a problem in the 1980s and all the Rhinos in Uganda were totally whipped out due to this very selfishness. We realized that this wasn't good because this had totally affected the tourism sector. Thanks to Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rhino Fund Uganda who spearheaded the process of introducing the Rhino in Uganda again in 2002. Now this sanctuary keeps growing day by day with new Rhinos being born. At the moment the number of rhinos is increasing day by day after the sanctuary started with just 4 rhinos in 2005.http://www.rhinofund.org/rhino-family.html
We do not want to have a situation where by South Africa has to go through what Uganda went through. This doesn't have to happen if there is a lot of awareness in saving the Rhinos for the future. We still want these wonderful animals in the national parks and hope that the people in South Africa can realize this before it is too late.
In Uganda we are looking at the future of these animals and the population of the rhinos in the sanctuary is increasing, we are certain that this move will be an example to all our neighbours and will increase the knowledge about the importance of the rhinos to many.
